Second Sunday Poetry Series (SSPS) originated in 2017 at Britt Marie’s restaurant on Solano Avenue in Albany, California. Restaurant owner Timo Rodriguez asked friend & poet Barb Reynolds to create a poetry reading for one Sunday in June. Barb grabbed fellow poets Kathryn Jordan & Penelope Barnes Thompson and the three of them gave a reading, which was packed. Timo turned to Barb and asked, “Will you create a regular series??” And Barb said yes.
SSPS flourished, featuring a wide array of emerging and established poets. The cozy & intimate setting of a restaurant/bar during off-hours, along with our warm & welcoming audience, have combined to make SSPS a rich experience for both reader and listener.
Farewell from Founder Barb Reynolds
Second Sunday Poetry Series is coming back! With a couple of changes….
I will be moving out of the Bay Area this summer. After 41 beloved years here, I’m excited to be launching into the next phase of my life! I’ve been wanting to downsize for several years, and I’ll be dividing my time between my cottage in Provincetown, MA and my sister’s beautiful guest house in Silverlake (Los Angeles). You can see what I’m up to on my website (barbreynolds.com), and I’ll definitely pop in to SSPS sometime next year.
And, I am thrilled to announce that poet Siân Killingsworth will take over curating SSPS! She will update everyone soon with info on the new venue, submission guidelines, etc., but in the meantime, here is a little bio about her:
Siân Killingsworth is a writer living in Northern California. Her work has been published in journals such as the Blue Earth Review, Typehouse Literary Journal, Stonecoast Review, Glass: A Journal of Poetry (Poets Resist), and other journals and anthologies. She received an MFA from the New School, where she worked on the staff of Lit. She founded and ran a poetry reading series hosted by the First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn. Siân taught English Composition for the City University of New York at York College and has led poetry craft workshops in Brooklyn, Boston, and San Francisco. She currently serves as the Members’ Anthology Editor for the Marin Poetry Center. Siân is delighted to take up the mantle of maintaining the Second Sunday Poetry Series and is grateful to Barb for this opportunity.
It has been my supreme pleasure to create this poetry series. My sincere thanks to all who have read for SSPS & to all who have attended. You’re the best.
Peace, love, and poetry XOXO
